  • THE EFFECTS OF PEST CONTROL ON THE ENVIRONMENT

The fact is that most of the negative effects of the use of pesticides is the destruction of non-target species. A 'non target species' is any creature or organism that is killed whilst targeting another species. eg.  Wasps are targeted but bees are also killed.  Some sources show as much of 92%-98% of pesticides end up in places other than where it was intended.  Why?

  • APPLICATION IS EVERYTHING

Some forms of agricultural pest control such as crop dusting or boom spraying simply works on the principle that more is better.  Saturating a zone will ultimately lead to to run-off into water courses and of course secondary poisoning of other organisms.  This large scale approach is sometimes translated into our homes when irresponsible pest control operators are involved

  • RESPONSIBLE PEST MANAGEMENT

Responsible pest management actually uses the least amount of treatment agent possible to bring maximum effect against the target species whilst minimising the effects on non-target species.  This requires a well thought out intelligent approach to the problem rather than thinking 'more is best'.
